Drimnagh's world 5,000 metre champion (1983)Eamonn,was a schoolboy champion under coach Gerry Farnan,He attended Villanova University in the USA where with famed coach Jumbo Elliott he became a world star.
Between 1974 and 1983 Eamonn won 11 national titles and held 14 national outdoor records. He finished fourth in the Montreal and Moscow Olympics. He was runner up in the 1978 European championships. He won the inaugural 5,000 metres world title in 1983 in Helsinki. In indoor running he had few peers, winning 7 prestigious Wannamakers miles in Madison Square Garden between 1977 and 1987 and also won 7 Melrose miles as well .His 52 wins in 70 races over 14 years surely makes him one of Ireland's finest. Eamonn managed a sub four minute mile after he reached forty years of age. Always proud of his Drimnagh heritage he was, and is a great ambassador for Ireland
